MuhMur SoundArt Radio Broadcast : 17/04/14.

I planned this playlist a few days before broadcast and then on the 16th (through the letterbox) came a copy of Defiant Pose #8 fanzine with a copy of the new Rema Rema 7" "International Scale" .. it had to be included, the first piece of Rema Rema vinyl in 34 years. The fanzine is excellent too .. Apologies of the skipping and sticking during the Kallabris track. Something to do with the stylus weight being altered and the "Anti-Skating" device not being on … Anyway, copy & paste and I hope you enjoy the listen … (The TG track at the end is from the "32nd Annual Report" album).

Secondhand Record Shops #21 : Bristol

Firstly, I know that this is not all the secondhand vinyl vendors that are in operation on Bristol, but I only had 2 hours on a wet and windy Monday morning …
Bristol does seem to be alive with secondhand vinyl shops at the moment. My first port of call was Plastic Wax records on the Cheltenham Road, about a mile walk from the City Centre, through Stokes Croft and on towards the railway arch. There are a few book shops, charity shops and veggie cafes along the walk so it is not unpleasant … even in the rain. Plastic Wax has a large selection of vinyl, and some decent stuff in the "Punk & New Wave" racks. Average seems to be a tenner but there were £5 racks and £1 boxes underneath the racking .. I managed to pick up a mint copy of the Tuxedomoon LP "Desire" (Pre Records) for £10. Plastic Wax were going through some shop shifting so no 7" singles were available .. shame. Further up the road is a clothes shop called "Re-Psycho" (all leather, studs and bumflaps) and underneath the shop there is a secondhand record shop, it was closed on my visit (opens at around mid-day), I'll try and get a look on my next Bristol visit.
The last time I was in St Nicholas Market there was one very small record stall, that has gone now but in its place are three shops. St. Nicholas Market is a pannier market right in the centre of Bristol. The pick of the three is Wanted Records. High class selection of new wave, experimental and avant grade records. I saw Lemon Kittens "Big Dentist" LP and Dr. Mix & The Remix LP nestling in the racks .. long time since I've seen either of those .. the problem is the price. Most records (even 12" Singles) seem to be between £15-£25 .. a tad expensive, if stuff was dropped by five or six (great band) pounds then I would have been buying. Been after that Dr Mix LP for a while … You have to ask the owner to look at his seven inches … Face The Dawn and Rock On Records sell everything from Madonna to Madness and Theatre Of Hate to U2. I didn't see any bargains, but (again) healthy volume of stock in the "New Wave & Indie" racks. Go to St Nick's Market around mid-day and grab lunch at the falafel shop!

1&2 : Plastic Wax Records.
3: Wanted Records.
4: Face The Dawn Records.

MyTrip Live In Bristol. April 2014.

A rainy Sunday evening in Bristol, and one of the best gigs I have been to in a while …. MyTrip, the solo drone project of Bulgarian noisician and writer Angel Godfree (not real name) were ending their week long UK tour at FAG Studiozz, a compact and bijou room in the Stokes Croft area of the City.  As always the gig was running late so there was chance to grab a quick pint in The Bell (my favourite pub in Bristol) before doors. 2 geezers in brand new Aaron Dilloway T-Shirts were DJ'ing glitch and minimalist techno … sounded awful but good to know the The Bell now stocks Marmite crisps .. anyway .. The gig was being organised by Heloise Zamzam and broadcast live on her FAG Radio programme, and alongside MyTrip were Canadian guy Wizard Of, Timothy C Holehouse and London based artist James Shearman. James was on first. One guy with an old field microphone and (what looked like) a Boss ME50 in a suitcase creating patterned walls of breath sounds. Looping and weaving. Short pieces (about 10 minutes or so), t'was an amazing sensation fitting the space well. I asked James if he was selling merchandise but unfortunately the man has no "physical" release so I asked him to do something for MuhMur Radio. I also asked him if he was familiar with Dome or Soviet France as his sound is awfully close (Adrian, whom I was with, also mentioned a similarity to Maeror Tri) but James was unaware claiming William Basinski to be his biggest influence. There is a download album available. http://jamesshearman.bandcamp.com/album/he11stone-visitation, give it an ear.
MyTrip saw Angel perform a thirty minute piece of familiarity. I have a few MyTrip releases, also some of Angel's other projects Zev Died Orchestra and Mother Spit. MyTrip has a unique sound, tonight was slow start to massive bass build, compelling and hypnotic. I think the sound was probably too big for the venue - speaker distortion happening towards the end .. but hey! MyTrip were playing live in Bristol. Discussing the sets later with Adrian we were noticing a return to the 1970's psychedelic, cosmic jam sound, the drifting synth sounds…all very Tangerine Dream and raw Greenslade. Not with Shearman or MyTrip but just in general, stuff in the ambient / drone genre … anyway. Timothy C Holehouse started up  - improvised guitar emoting. It was a shame that at the same time TCH began his set a band started rehearsing in the room next door and their sound was bleeding through the brickwork. It was time to leave …
A great gig, shame to miss Wizard Of and TCH but that is what happens when gigs start late! I recommend keeping an ear out for James Shearman.

MuhMur SoundArt Radio Broadcast:03/04/2014.

The light nights are back again making the journey through Dartington Estate to the SoundArt Studio a joy … raining all day but a glorious sunset with mist rising from the River Dart. Beautiful.
Tonights programme features some new tracks by Sleaford Mods - songs from their upcoming LP "Divide & Exit" as well as a recording of their gig in Exeter last February. Copy and paste the link and have a listen.

I am (slightly) concerned about recording levels and state of the needles at SoundArt, all sounded good from where I was sat but playback seems questionable .. I hope that doesn't spoil the listen.
